Mongrel Rig teaser

Posted by on Feb 18, 2011 in Blog

I’ve been very busy over the last few weeks, both in work and with my University commitments. I’m almost finished with my dissertation (which I’ll hopefully will be able to put online after the marking) and of course working my character who I now refer to as “Mongrel” because….well that’s what he is essentially.

I’ve finally managed to start rigging him. There is a plan of making videos with the breakdown of the rig, but for now I’ll just post some pictures of him with controllers in place and a checklist of things I want to incorporate. Most of these are already done, some of them are a bit more tricky than I expected, therefore will need some more research and of course trial & error.

Functionality

  • IK / FK blending and auto-snap for legs and arms including clavicle (thinking about head as well)
  • IK / FK fingers.
  • Reversed IK setup for knuckle walking.
  • Dynamic foot rotation pivot.
  • Broken hierarchy spine with combined IK and FK functionality.
  • Accurate forearm twisting (using radius and ulna bones)
  • Two pivot wrist rotation (different pivots for rotating up and down) for more accurate deformation
  • IK Hands space switching with auto-snap
  • Head space switching.
  • Dynamic / manual tail.

Deformation

  • Full body muscle system
  • Auto foot flatten on contact
  • Joints and Blendshapes driven facial setup
  • Proxy / full geometry
